5th grade is still rocking the Engineering bent. We've been looking at installation artists Sandy Skoglund, Niki de Ste. Phalle, and Simon Rodia. Installations are artworks that involve the viewer--often one can walk right into the art, as in the case of Niki de Ste. Phalle's huge sculptures that are placed in public areas for people to walk through or even climb. Niki's work was in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens a few years ago. Using such ideas as a jumping off point, fifth grade students have designed and built small installations, almost like maquettes, for viewers to enjoy. They followed up their designs with stories about their work.
